Phil Swindells cheque presentation for £2059!

Phil Swindells cheque presentation for £2059!

Phil Swindells, who ran a 35 mile ultramarathon on behalf of Ben Trend Getinvolved in August to raise money for our club , came to meet us at one of our Kirkham swimming sessions. Here he is with some of our club members, committee and Ben's family, handing over the final sum of £2059!

Grateful thanks to Phil for raising such a fantastic amount of money for the club and for bringing Ben's family to meet us. Our children get a great deal out of the swimming opportunity that the club offers them. Sincere thanks also to all who helped and assisted Phil on his 35 mile run. Well done and thanks!

Tom Wright raises over £3000 in a 19 hour run for Fylde Sharks!

Tom Wright’s son, Freddie, swims with Fylde Sharks at St Annes on a Saturday afternoon. On June 27th 2015, Tom completed the Ultimate Trails Challenge to raise money for Fylde Sharks. The picture shows Freddie joining his dad for the final leg!

This grueling challenge involves running 110km within 24 hours in the Central Lake District and Tom completed it in an unbelievable 18 hours, 47mins and 1 sec, raising over £3000 (and still counting!) for Fylde Sharks.

Wow! Many, many thanks Tom!

Phil Swindells and his 35 mile run for Sharks!

Phil Swindells and his 35 mile run for Sharks!

"It was warm and sunny as we set off from Preston Grasshoppers RUFC on the first leg of my adventure across the Fylde. Accompanying me on bikes were my wife Sarah, Peter Trend from BenTrend GetInvolved, David Rees, Aidan Carson and Ian Pearson. About 3 or 4 miles in we were unexpectedly joined by another group of cyclists, Andy Charles and the Paris to Pisa Charity Bike Ride crew and for them to cycle out and meet us was a fantastic gesture, please look out for updates of their epic 800 mile cycle ride on Facebook and other social media. I was now surrounded by about 10 people on bikes making my journey on the fairly dodgy back roads a pretty safe one, thanks everyone for that.

Aidan Carson left us after this and Ian Pearson had a puncture so he decided to sort that and then head back home Preston way, cheers Aidan and Ian. We arrived at Thornton/Cleveleys RUFC with a bit of rain in the air but bang on schedule and were joined by Aodhan Carson who was going to run the rest of the route with me and I really can’t thank him enough for that! As we entered Fleetwood and Reesy had recovered from getting his front wheel stuck in a tram track and coming off his bike, the rain began to get steadily heavier and we definitely needed the 10 minutes respite from the heavy downpour in Fleetwood RUFC’s office before setting off south towards Blackpool.

Running through Cleveleys, wet through, wasn’t much fun but our spirits were lifted by the sight of a number of Blackpool RUFC players waiting for us for the run into their club. About 15 or so people came out to greet us at Blackpool which was fantastic, they also gave us some money to put to the total so all in all a brilliant effort from them.

Accompanying myself and the cyclists for the run into Fylde from here, were Paul Beverley and Richard Openshaw and on the Promenade at Bispham, Deborah and Tony Terras joined us too. Aodhan was still running strong and the last 11 miles would have been so much harder if this lot had not been there to help me along. Unfortunately Reesy had another mishap on his bike when his chain snapped and he met up with us at Fylde later.

The sun came out as we ran and cycled along Blackpool Promenade and dried us all off nicely! It was a brilliant feeling as we entered Fylde RUFC’s gates after 5 hours and 15 minutes running and after a good few slaps on the back and photos, I celebrated completing the 35 miles with a pint of Guinness; this went down unbelievably well! Doug and Dorothy Thomas from Fylde Sharks were at Fylde to meet us, which was great and it was really good to meet them.

I’d like to thank everyone who has helped, supported and sponsored me on this challenge. I’ve named a few people in this write up but there were so many others and you are all awesome. To be able to give some money to Fylde Sharks, who do amazing work with the youngsters of the area, makes all the hours before, during and after the event worthwhile. At the moment the total money raised is about £1,600 and I can’t wait to arrange to come along with this and see you all.

Thanks very much from Phil Swindells"

THANK YOU Phil and well done, from all at Fylde Sharks. We cannot thank you enough for raising all this money for our club!

High achievers Ben & Alex

High achievers Ben & Alex

Congratulations to Ben Wilding and Alex Crockart for their amazing hard work and completing their IOS Alpha Level 7 Awards!

Ben, shown in the picture receiving his certificate from volunteer swimming instructor Doug Thomas, was the first to complete this in February and Ben has just completed his Bronze award also. Hot on his heels is Alex, who has become the second swimmer to achieve level 7.

This was no mean feat as the level 7 involves swimming 25ms in backstroke, crawl, breaststroke & butterfly, performing a sequence of sculling and floating, a dive, a 50m continuous swim with 1 stroke, a 100m continuous swim using 3 different strokes, treading water for 30 seconds and completing an obstacle course without touching the bottom of the pool with their feet. The Bronze award includes swimming 400m which is 16 lengths of the pool!

Well done Ben and Alex for this fantastic achievement!

Emma Jeffrey swims with Sharks!

Emma Jeffrey swims with Sharks!

Fourteen year old, Lytham St Anne’s High School student, Emma Jeffrey, raised £120 for Fylde Sharks, when she swam with Real Sharks recently. Emma is a keen supporter and a regular volunteer with our club and bravely decided to swim with real sharks to raise funds for us.

She came out of the challenge unscathed and said, “It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was so exciting when the sharks were swimming right past me. I am so glad that I decided to ask people to sponsor me to do it for Fylde Sharks. It is an amazing organization, they do so much for children with disabilities and their families.”

Emma has a cousin who suffers from severe autism and life can be very demanding for him and his family. She continued, ” My cousin swims with the group and has gained a lot from the experience. I am happy that I can finally thank the group and give something back.”

Christine Miller, Chair of Fylde Sharks said, “It is fantastic when a young person gives up their time to help other less fortunate than themselves. The club are delighted that Emma raised this much needed funding for the club and wish her well for the future.”

Massive thanks to all the Lytham St Annes cubs for spending hours wrapping the Fylde Sharks childrens' Christmas presents!

Without their help, this would have taken us hours, so we are very grateful indeed and we think you all deserve a huge pat on the back. You did an amazing job well done!

Fylde Sharks Flying High at the St Annes Kite Festival

St Annes Kite Festival 2012

The Kite Festival on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July 2012 was a roaring success and our stall raised nearly £700 for Fylde Sharks Disability Swimming Club.

We had the only stall on the beach, despite the wind’s best attempts to blow us away, and we offered fun for all the family with a variety of different games including hook a duck, guess the number of sweets and a raffle.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the Festival and all those who helped and supported Fylde Sharks and helped make this event so successful. Not only did we raise vital funds for the club, but we also had lots of fun (memories of Graham Lavin shouting "Hook a Duck" across the beach and of Paul Cooper’s patience and expertise on the Hook a Duck game will never leave us – they found their true vocation that weekend!) and we met lots of wonderful people.

All the raffle prizes were kindly donated by local organisations and businesses and we cannot thank them enough for their generosity. Special thanks have to go to :

  • The Best Western Glendower Promenade Hotel for donating our first prize of a 2 night dinner, B&B stay for two!
  • Fylde Coast YMCA, Glasdons, Fylde Rugby Club, Tesco’s, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Darren Sprigg for kindly donating our other amazing raffle prizes
  • Darren Skelly for his patience and helping us with the loan and erection of a tent
  • St Annes Kite Festival organisers and kite flyers, especially Pat, Jenny, Bob and Craig, for putting on such an amazing event and for all their help over the weekend.
  • All our volunteers who worked tirelessly for Fylde Sharks

We had so much help and support from so many people it is impossible to thank everyone individually so if we have missed anyone, we are very sorry and thank you so much. We can’t wait for next year!

Pat Furgusson Coast to Coast Fundraising Walk

Pat Furgusson Coast to Coast Fundraising Walk

Pat Fergusson, Fylde Soroptimist, is back home safe and sound after surviving the Wainwright Coast to Coast walk.

Pat bravely defied the British weather and spent half of June walking the 196 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay raising funds to be shared between TOFS (Tracheo Oesophageal Fistula Support for families of babies born unable to swallow) and Fylde Sharks. Pat said “the weather had been so wet all day. I am sure it would have been easier to swim the last 20 miles rather than walk it, as we did.

The triumphal march along the cliff-top to Robin Hood's Bay gave absolutely nil visibility and I had been wondering all day just how long you can have wet feet before your nails drop off. But that being said, it was the most wonderful experience and every moment of it was fantastic in its own way, not only the route but the people, the odd places and situations we found ourselves in and the terrific camaraderie of the people Chris, John and I met along the way."

A massive thank you goes out to Pat from all at Fylde Sharks, well done for this amazing achievement - thank you!
